Building New Ministries

Living Language, Living Church

A living language changes. The slang and jokes of each generation shift the meaning of words and introduce new expressions. A living language is never “done.”

A living church is never “done” either. Churches in decline might consider piloting new ministries as a way to remind itself it is still kicking. Faith gatherings of Methodists who are not yet a formal church might consider piloting new ministries as a way to engage the larger community. In either case, growth is life.

Transformational discipleship ministries are living faith expressions. These small, boring, new ministries will be highly specific to each church or faith community. They are built at the intersection of Christian mission, community need, and church resources. Transformational ministries help faith gatherings and churches invite the larger communities they serve into a dynamic, living faith.

Portfolio of New Ministries

A portfolio of new ministries helps a church or new faith community build a wide front porch of prevenient discipleship opportunities open to all, as well as entry points into spiritual practice that do not resemble traditional worship experiences. (For example, candle-lit contemplative services, nature meditation gatherings, and lectio groups who explore thoughtful texts outside of scripture are both valuable in themselves and entry points into our church community.) Another benefit of piloting a diverse group of new ministries is that it encourages many different church members to give it a go to address a community need they care about deeply.
